HÂþ»­ spotlights rising talent in Composition for Screen showcase 2023

Composition for Screen students showcase their work performed to new short films, documentaries and animations by early career professionals, rescoring of videogames extracts and public domain videos. 

On 27 April, students on the Royal College of Music’s prestigious Composition for Screen course showcase some of their work in front of an audience which includes guests from the music and film industries.  The new works by rising stars of the composition for screen world will be performed live to videos projected above the orchestra in the HÂþ»­’s atmospheric Britten Theatre. The composers’ work will include music composed for original animations and short films as well as rescoring of extracts from existing films and video games.

The evening will be introduced with a talk between Emmy and British Television Society Award-winning composer Nainita Desai and HÂþ»­ Area Leader in Composition for Screen Dr Dimitri Scarlato. In 2022, Nainita Desai won the Women In Film & TV Award for Creative Technology, having previously won the World Soundtrack Awards Discovery of the Year the previous year. Her many accolades also include being a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit and an Ivor Novello nominee. 

Dr Dimitri Scarlato, HÂþ»­ Area Leader in Composition for Screen comments: “The Composition for Screen showcase is a unique experience for the students and the audience, with the Britten Theatre transformed into an exclusive cinema for an atmospheric and vibrant musical evening. Throughout the course the students have many recording opportunities with various ensembles, and this showcase is the pinnacle of their studies where we invite professionals from the industry to experience their work.”

The Royal College of Music Composition for Screen course allows students at postgraduate level to hone their compositional voice with guidance from some of the leading composers and experts in the field. The HÂþ»­, being situated in one of the busiest production cities in the world for film, television and advertising industries, has a wide range of opportunities including collaborations with London film schools. Alumni from the course go on to work across the world in Hollywood, Europe and Asia, winning BAFTAs, Grammys, Golden Globes, Academy Awards and other awards for their work in film, television and gaming.
