Holly Mathieson on conducting
Monday 26 March 2018
Award-winning conductor Holly Mathieson visited the Royal College of Music in March to conduct and record a performance of Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite with the HÂþ» Philharmonic.
During her visit, she shared her experience of working with young people as well as the advice and inspiration she hopes to pass on through her work. Holly’s interview is followed by a recording of the HÂþ» Philharmonic performing live in the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall. The video also features footage of the orchestra rehearsing Kodály’s Háry János Suite under Holly’s baton, with its notable part for traditional Hungarian folk instrument, the cimbalom.
As part of her time at the College, Holly also led the HÂþ» Philharmonic in a performance of the Mother Goose Suite at Cadogan Hall. The audience comprised 750 children from primary schools across London who were given the opportunity to ask questions, explore different orchestral sections and sing along with a specially commissioned song. One lucky audience member even had the opportunity to conduct on stage!
